Zia Sunset on Kos: Bus, Organised Tour or Hire Car?

Updated October 20, 2026 · 5 min read

A mountain village with white houses and a church tower against an orange evening sky above the sea

Zia is the place to watch the sunset on Kos: a mountain village about 15 km from Kos Town, at roughly 350 metres on the slopes of Mount Dikeos, the island’s highest peak at 846 metres. The sun sets behind Kalymnos. The only real question is how to get there and back, because that decides how long you can stay.

Three ways to get there

The public bus. A KTEL bus links Kos Town and Zia, but only on a few runs a day in season, and the timetable changes with the season. According to a Greek tourism guide, the times are not always convenient for watching the sunset. A bus up for the evening only works if there is also one back, so check the return before you go.

An organised sunset trip. Three offers cover it, all about 3 hours:

TripPrice per personRatingReviews
Roundtrip Bus Transfer to Mount Zia for Sunset Viewing€254.4567
Zia Sunset Tour with Panoramic Island Views€264.5153
Zia Village Sunset Tour with Hotel Pickup€304.5286

A hire car. Zia is about half an hour from Kos Town by car, and the road climbs gradually from the coast. If you drive, compare car hire on Kos for your dates, and check the excess and the deposit before you book.

What each tour offers

The €25 trip is the most-reviewed and is the simplest: a return bus from your hotel to the viewpoint, and the sun going down behind Kalymnos. The description does not list a stop in the village, so if you want a meal or a walk, one of the others fits better.

The €26 trip takes you to the top of Dikaios Mountain, as the listing calls it, and picks you up at a designated meeting point near your hotel, not at the door. That is worth reading before you book: check where that point is for your hotel.

The €30 trip is the village version, with a stroll through the alleys, a café and a meal at a local restaurant. It is the only one of the three whose description mentions cafés and restaurants, and it has hotel pickup. Check on the booking page whether a meal is included in the price.

If you would rather combine Zia with a day of sightseeing, the Island Tour to Asklepieion and Zia takes 8 hours and costs €49, rated 4.4 from 304 reviews. The description does not say that the sunset is part of it.

Tour or car?

Take a tour if you do not want to drive a mountain road in the dark, or if you are staying somewhere with no easy way up. The evening is arranged, and someone else drives you back.

Take the car if you want to choose when to arrive. Sunset time moves through the year, so look up the exact time for your date and arrive well before it. Plan the way down too: the drive back to the coast happens after dark.

Take the bus only if you have checked both the up and the down times. With only a few runs a day, it is the choice with the least room for error.

What to expect

Zia is a regular stop for organised tours, with free time for shopping and dinner built into many of them, so expect company at sunset. If you want a quieter moment, arrive earlier. On a cloudy evening there is no sunset to speak of, so read the cancellation and weather terms before you book.

Mountain evenings can be cooler than the coast. Take a layer.

Verdict

For most people the €25 return bus is the easiest way to see the view without a car, and the most-reviewed. If you want to eat in the village too, pay the €30 and keep the evening free of logistics. If you already rent a car for the week, driving up yourself costs little beyond fuel. See all evening options on the sunset tours page, and for a longer day by water, the 3-island boat trip.
