Kos Wine Tasting Tour: Two Listings Compared, and Is It Worth It?

Kos makes wine, and two 3-hour tours with transport let you taste it: the Wineries Tour with Wine Tastings and Transportation at €55 and the Tour of 2 Wineries with Wine Tasting and Small Bites at €62. They are close to each other on paper, and the differences are small but real.

The island’s wine in a few lines

Wine on Kos is a small business, not a famous region. One well-known producer is Ktima Akrani, also called the Triantafyllopoulos winery: a family estate in the Miniera area at the foot of Mount Dikeos, whose first vines were planted in 1996 and which has welcomed visitors since 2004. Do not expect a long wine-trail with dozens of cellars. Expect a pleasant afternoon with a short list of wines.

One caution: neither listing names the wineries it visits. The descriptions say “2 wineries” and mention the Dodecanese and Kos, nothing more. So the producer above is background, not a promise of what you will see. If the names matter to you, check the booking page or ask the operator.

The two tours side by side

Tour of 2 Wineries with Wine Tasting and Small Bites€623 hours4.3128

The €55 tour visits two wineries on guided tours, where you learn about winemaking, take in views with a wine pairing, and have time to stroll through the vineyards. Transport is in the title.

The €62 tour is an afternoon trip with pickup from a designated meeting point near your hotel, not from the door. It promises Greek wines paired with local treats, in the title as “small bites”. The extra €7 is for the food, as far as the title tells us, but the description does not say how much of it there is. If you plan to skip dinner, ask or read reviews first.

The cheaper tour is the more-reviewed one by a wide margin, and rates a little higher. That is a reason to choose it, not a guarantee of a better afternoon.

Two other wine listings exist, but they are different in kind: a 1-hour tasting at Skevofilax Winery in Kefalos at €60 (4.7 from 4 reviews) and a 1-hour premium tasting at Skevofilax at €95, which has no reviews yet. Both are tastings at the winery rather than tours, and the descriptions we have do not mention transport, so what is said below about wine and driving applies to getting there.

Why the tour, not a hire car

Wine and driving do not mix, and wineries sit out in the countryside. A tour solves that: someone else drives, and you can taste properly. If you have a hire car for the week anyway, leave it at the hotel for this afternoon. If you want a car for other days, you can compare car hire on Kos, and check the excess and the deposit before you book.

What to expect, and what to check

Three hours and two wineries: that is the shape of both tours. The descriptions do not say how many wines you taste, so think of it as an introduction, not a full wine education. Check these before you pay:

  • The pickup. One tour says “designated meeting point near your hotel”. Find out where that is for your hotel.
  • What is included. The descriptions mention tastings and transport, and one adds small bites. Anything beyond that, such as a bottle to take home, is not promised.
  • Alcohol and age. The tour is built around tasting, so it is not a children’s trip. The listings do not give an age limit; ask if you are bringing teenagers.

Verdict

For most people the €55 Wineries Tour is the easier choice: more reviews, a slightly higher rating, and a lower price. Pay the extra €7 if you want something to eat with your wine. In that case take the tour with small bites, as long as the pickup point suits you. For a wine-free evening on the mountain, see the Zia sunset guide, and for every food and drink option, the wine and food tours page.
