Kos With Kids: What Works, What Doesn't, and Where to Start
Updated October 20, 2026 · 6 min read
Kos suits families because the easy things are easy: long sandy beaches with shallow water, a water park, short boat trips, and a flat main town. The hard part is the days in between. Here is what works with children, what is a poor idea, and what it costs.
Start with the beach
Tigaki is the one to try first. It is about 11 km from Kos Town on the north coast, with a long sandy shoreline, shallow, clear water, and sun beds with shade, beach bars and casual restaurants close by. Seaweed can wash up along the shore, which is natural but not what the brochure shows.
Paradise Beach, between Kardamena and Kefalos on the south coast, has a gentle slope into the sea that suits small children. Shade is limited unless you rent an umbrella. It is a long way from Kos Town, so with children a hire car or an organised trip makes the day easier. If you drive, you can compare car hire on Kos, and check the child seat, the excess and the deposit before you book.
The water park
Lido Water Park at Mastichari is about 25 km from Kos Town. It covers 75,000 square metres, which the listing calls one of the largest water parks in Greece. Entry on GetYourGuide is €22 per person, rated 4.4 from 927 reviews, with an optional transfer. A family-travel guide lists a wave pool, a lazy river and several slides, and says the park suits younger children better than the island’s second water park.
What to check: children’s prices and any height or age rules are on the booking page, not in the short description. A family-travel guide says the park is open only in the main summer period, so check the dates before you plan around it. Take sun protection and shade breaks seriously; a water park has little natural shade.
Boat trips, in order of length
| Trip | Price per person | Length |
|---|---|---|
| Glass-Bottom Boat Cruise with Mermaid Show | €27 | 1.5 hours |
| Glass-Bottom Boat Cruise with Swimming Stops | €20 | 2.5 hours |
| Kos Pirate Cruise: 3 Islands, Swimming and Lunch | €27 | 7.5 hours |
| Full-Day Boat Cruise to 3 Islands | €30 | 7.5 hours |
The mermaid-show trip describes itself as “perfect for families and short trips”, and it is the one to try with small children. The longer glass-bottom cruise is the cheaper option; see what you actually see on a glass-bottom boat before you promise your children fish. The pirate cruise calls itself an adventure “for all ages”, but 7.5 hours is long, and we explain who it suits in the pirate boat guide.
The listings give a price per person. If children pay less, the booking page shows it. As a ceiling, four people on the pirate cruise at the full price would be €108.
Things in Kos Town
Kos Town is mostly flat, which helps with a pushchair. The harbour is overlooked by the Castle of the Knights, and a family-travel guide notes that the castle has uneven surfaces and no barriers, so it suits older children better than toddlers. The same guide says the archaeological museum does not keep its exhibits behind glass, so small children need supervision. For something easy, the Kos Town tuk tuk tour lasts 1 hour and costs €60 for a group of up to 4. It is rated 4.9, though only 46 reviews stand behind it.
What to skip, or do only with older children
- Long island days. The organised Nisyros volcano trip is an 8-hour day, and the Bodrum day trip needs a passport or ID card check at the port, which takes time with children.
- Jeep and quad tours. The jeep or quad guide explains the options. The listing says the passenger option lets you join without a licence, but age limits are not given, so ask before you book.
- Horse riding. The listing gives no age limit; see the horse riding guide.
- Wine tours. Built around tasting; not for a family day.
A simple plan
Do not fill every day. Beaches in the morning, shade at midday, and one organised outing every second or third day is realistic with children. The heat of July and August is the real limit on most days, not the list of attractions. Pick a base near a sandy beach, keep the water park or a short boat trip for the middle of the week, and save the big days for when everyone is rested.
Verdict
Start with Tigaki and the shorter boat trips; add Lido Water Park if the dates fit; keep the long island days for older children. More ideas are on the things to do page and the boat trips page.
